The grape variety is almost entirely derived from indigenous clones of the Friuli Colli Orientali D.O.C. grapes or from very low-yielding varieties that were often obsolete in the past, but now precious for their outstanding distinguishing quality. Picolit wine, which already graced imperial tables in the 14th century, stands out among them.
